The end of an era

As I sit and type this, it's two hours to the end of March. It's the end of the financial year. It's hopefully the end of Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe's regime (leave your Zimbabwe Mugabe) and more importantly for me the end of three highly respected and successful radio DJ careers. 5FM's Ian F, Kevin Fine and Nicole Fox bid their farewells on Friday, yesterday and tonight respectively. I have in a sense grown up with all three and it's hard to come to terms with the fact that we wont be hearing their voices on the station anymore.

Nicole Fox has been a real inspiration to me. I remember waking up for early morning swimming training, on cold winter mornings and thinking to myself what the hell are you doing? It was that voice on radio that got me going especially when she used to call people to wake them up (Rise n Shine). She once called me in matric too- thanks Mom bahahaha. So for eight years, highs and lows I have listened to Ms Nicole Fox and tonight I realised something. I realised the immense power she has. Not in terms of her celebrity but in terms of how much of an impact she has had on people's lives. A little 10-year old phoning in to send Nicole her best wishes, a young lady from London. People from all walks of life, people who respect someone who does what she loves and shares that passion with others. Someone who warns, educates and empowers people. I look up to her, as I do to Kevin Fine and Ian F. All three of these DJ's are legends and will be missed. Thank you guys for making the airwaves what they are today. I'm writing this as though they're my friends, but that's what I feel like they are and well friends inspire you to be the best that you can be. So thanks again! You rock and may I wish all three of you the best of luck in whatever you might do.

And so begins a new era in radio. It's very exciting and mark my words, my chance is coming!!!
